L-Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid – mainly found in muscles (60%), but also other tissues (lungs, etc.)
Glutamine deficiency can be caused by:
*Stress – increased cortisol in blood – glutamine taken from muscles into circulation (muscles waste away)
*Illness, post-surgery, wasting syndrome/diseases (AIDS) – glutamine taken from muscles into circulation
*Exercise (especially intense training) – increased need for glutamine to repair and build muscles
Benefits:
- May assists in healing of wounds, burns, injuries – tissue repair mechanism
- May help form glutathione production – strengthens T-cells (modulates the immune system)
- Muscle wasting illnesses – diminishes muscle glutamine levels – supplement to assist with repairing and protecting (growth hormone)
- May increase lean muscle mass
- May assist to decrease body fat
- May help repairing muscle tissue (post-exercise)
- 60% of muscle amino acids = Glutamine
- May help regulate acid-alkaline balance – prevents lactic acid build-up
- May help removing ammonia and from the blood, which builds up due to protein breakdown during exercise
- Glutamine assists in glycogen metabolism – may assist with stabilizing blood sugar levels
- Safe for diabetes, insulin resistance and weight maintenance
- Helps to curb carbohydrate (especially sugar) cravings
- Contributes to integrity of intestinal mucosal membrane – may help healing tissue
- Glutamine – promotes the division of rapidly dividing cells (e.g.: cells lining GIT)
- Effective aid in treating – leaky gut, diarrhoea, ulcers, IBS, GIT inflammation, etc.
- Assists in effective nutrient absorption – ensures adequate nutrient stores
- Glutamine easily crosses the BBB – acts as a ‘brain fuel’
- May help reducing alcohol cravings – often used in rehabilitation
More information:
- In capsule form – has to be broken down; low dosage
- Powder – readily available for absorption and utilisation; more economic
Dosage:
- Adult dosage – 1.5-14g (depends on individual’s needs)
- Heat sensitive – take in cold/room temperature drinks (juice, smoothies, water, etc.)
